Although far from ubiquitous, decorative artwork is sparsely distributed throughout the archaeological record of the British Mesolithic, both spatially and temporally. Geometric patterns incised into material culture can be found on artefacts across the British Isles from Camas Daraich, Skye Clarke et al. In addition to this, sculpture ‘in the round’ has been demonstrated through a stylised shale phallus from Nab Head, Pembrokeshire David and Walker , while an Early Mesolithic date has been suggested for two instances of incised cave art at Aveline’s Hole and Long Hole, Somerset Mullan and Wilson Chronologically, dating evidence suggests that art is distributed throughout the Mesolithic.
While several authors note the presence of these expressive practices within Mesolithic Britain, few have offered interpretations for the meaning behind these actions. By far the most debated piece of material culture in relation to British Mesolithic art is the Nab Head shale ‘amulet’. The original excavator rather prudishly described this as a ‘duck-head’ although later conceded that it may in fact be a ‘venus phallica’ Gordon-Williams This led Breuil to interpret it as a coded jeu de mots , blending references to gender and fertility Breuil Jacobi identifies a further piece of shale within the Nab Head assemblage that shows signs of working, and he links this to more stylised representations of the female form.
The context of deposition of the Nab Head ‘phallus’ has also been noted, apparently having been placed into the ground alongside nine shale beads Chatterton Clark Clark linked the chevrons observed on the Romsey decorated antler and Hammersmith bone adze to similar artistic patterns from across Europe. These form part of a wider group of bone and antler artefacts featuring ‘single chevrons often one placed above another’ which are ‘scattered indiscriminately over the whole of the North European plain’ Clark ,

The buildings formed part of the Landsdowne Estate until when they were then occupied by Strong’s Brewery. Grooves in the stone floor of the hallway of 4, Portersbridge Street, made by the rolling of many a beer barrel, bear testimony to the existence of a ground-floor cellar and there was evidence that beer could be purchased in the street through a small hatch. In , the properties were purchased by Stead, Tylee and Potter, a local firm of solicitors. The properties were sold to B W Attlee in and the firm of solicitors Tylee, Mortimer and Attlee expanded into number 4 in , occupying the buildings as offices until , when the practice closed.
Romsey and District Buildings Preservation Trust acquired the group of buildings for renovation and conversion into domestic dwellings. The installation of modern toilets a shower room and kitchen completed the restoration. Of the three buildings that made up this restoration project, 4 Portersbridge Street was by far the oldest, dating from as early as the 15th century. Although intact from the first floor up, the ravages of time had caused major deterioration to the oak beams of the lower storey.

The last century of Anglo-Saxon England witnessed an extraordinary increase in the survival and, therefore, probably in the production of stone sculpture in the south-east. Even excluding the material from the excavations at Winchester see Chap. VIII , nearly two hundred sculptures survive which can be dated to this period, as opposed to about three dozen surviving from the period between c.
This contrast must reflect more than differential rates of survival. In addition there appears to have been a radical change in the types of sculpture produced. In the earlier period almost half the pieces were from cross-shafts or cross-heads, about one-third were architectural sculptures, and only five were monumental sculptures. In the late tenth and eleventh centuries there seems to have been almost a complete reversal.
Free-standing crosses account for less than one tenth of the surviving examples, whereas monumental sculptures account for about a quarter. More than half, however, are architectural. The remaining pieces are unclassified.
